Jobs in Aerospace Manufacturing -JAM
The Jobs in Aerospace Manufacturing (JAM) Project is an industry-lead machinist training program designed to enhance the ability of aerospace manufacturing companies to hire, train, and grow their workforce.
Goals:
- Develop a system through which entry-level workers can obtain employment in aerospace manufacturing.
- Provide training for incumbent workers to increase their skill sets and knowledge of aerospace manufacturing.
- Enhance aerospace manufacturing companies ability to hire, train, and grow their workforce in a cost effective manner.
Partnership:
Five aerospace manufacturing companies:
- Bomco
- Boston Centerless
- Hansen Engineering & Machinery
- Middleton Aerospace Corporation
- Wilbur Tracey Associates
Other Partners:
- The North Shore Workforce Investment Board
- The North Shore Career Centers
- North Shore Community College
- The E-Team Machinist Training Program
Funding: BayState Works grant totaling $267,389. The grant is provided by the Commonwealth Corporation and the State of Massachusetts via a state economic stimulus package.
Training: There are two components to the program: training for incumbent workers and training for individuals not currently employed in manufacturing, but interested in joining the industry (pre-employed workers). Curriculum designed around employer needs and based on employer recommendations and feedback.
Incumbent Workers:
- Classes customized/scheduled to meet needs of employers
- Incumbent Worker classes held at most cost effective times for employers
- Incumbent works receive regular compensation while attending classes
Pre-Employed Workers:
- 38 weeks of training
- 20+ hours per week
- E-Team emphasizes: teaming, participation, interest, and enthusiasm
Academic Training:
Math, ESOL, Computer Skills, Soft-Skill Workshops including: critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork
Technical Training:
Geometric Tolerancing/Blue Print Reading, Basic Machining, Inspection/Quality Control, Basic CNC Control, CNC, Turning, Milling, and Welding
Internships:
- Component of pre-employed training program
- Temporary employment that could lead to permanent hire
- 12+ weeks of on-the-job training
- Approximately $12.00 per hour with a suggested raise at completion of training (incentive for student to complete training, perhaps $1 per hour)
- Employers interview and accept students before hiring.
- Employers receive recommendations from project staff commenting on students’ program participation, enthusiasm, and attitude.
- Students participating in an internship are required to continue to attend all training classes as a condition of hire/employment.
